Bred Ewe Sale Rebounds

Bred Ewe Sale Average Up Slightly

 

Forty three head of sheep sold through the sale ring at the Rock County Fairgrounds to help the average for the Wisconsin Sheep Breeders Co-op annual sale rebound a little from last year. Leading the way were the Southdown consignments from A.J. Nevens Livestock, Lodi, whose mature ewe stood Champion and a yearling ewe that was reserve sold to Jeff & Mary Liddle of Roberts, for $200 and $300 respectively. In the Dorset consignments were two yearling ewes, one from Mike Houfe, Milton, that sold to the Liddles for $200 and one from Gary Klug and Lynn Blank, Port Washington, that was named reserve champion and sold to Brandon and Steph Loehrke, Waupaca, for $350. Klug and Blank followed with a spring ewe lamb that took champion honors and that also sold to Loehrkes for $200, bringing the Dorset average to $250.

 

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Arlington Sheep Unit consigned a Rambouillet mature ewe that was named breed champion and shared the top selling honors, going to Red Ballard of Carrolltown, IL for $500.

 

In the Suffolks, Romaine and David Ace, Brooklyn, paced the sales with their mature ewe that went to J & P Farm, Winthrop Harbor, IL for $500, the second top seller. Dick and Grace Piechowski, Waupaca, fielded two yearling ewes, one of which was named champion, and a spring ewe lamb, all of which sold to Matthew Wiersma, Beaver Dam, at $200, $300 (champion) and $275 respectively. Huenefeld Farms of Freeport, IL brought in their spring ewe lamb, which stood reserve and sold to Howard, Wayne, David and Jerry Ace of Brooklyn for $200. The Suffolks averaged $295.

 

The Hampshires got started with a mature ewe from Gary Klug and Lynn Blank that sold to Morgan Eilers of Weyauwega at $275. Klug and Blank then brought in their reserve entry, a second mature ewe that then went to Matthew Wiersma for $250, and a winter ewe lamb that sold to Deanna Zernicke, Bonduel, at $300. Dick and Mark Roembke of Cedarburg consigned two yearling ewes, the first of which sold to Paul Esser, Glen Haven, for $275 and the second going to Matthew Wiersma for $250. Mark & Kay Suehs, Manawa, brought in their champion and high selling yearling ewe that went to Deanna Zernicke at $400, and then a spring ewe lamb that brought $375 from Alyssa Seitz, Seymour. The UW-Madison Arlington Sheep Unit consigned two mature ewes, one going to J & P Farm for $325 and the second to Allen Fehrman, Tilleda, for $250. That rounded out the Hampshire sales which averaged $300.

 

The field got a little more crowded in the wether type sheep, which got off to a decent pace with a Romaine & David Ace spring ewe lamb entry that captured reserve honors and sold to Jan Bakken, Stoughton, at $350. Paul and Dawn Hoff, Mindoro, then brought in their yearling ewe, selling it to J & P Farm for $350. Peterson Show Lambs, Evansville, brought in a mature ewe that went to Shady Chestnut Farm, Sturtevant, for $275, followed by a second mature ewe selling to Jan Bakken at $425. Peterson’s third entry was a yearling ewe that pulled in $300 from David Ace, Brooklyn.

 

Jaek Livestock, Bonduel, sold two mature ewes to Rebecca Doman, Watertown, for $250 and $200; one to Paul Esser at $200, and a fourth to Matthew Wiersma for $250. Jarek’s yearling ewe pulled in $$200 from J & P Farm, which was followed up with two winter ewe lambs, one of which sold to Rebecca Doman for $350 and the other to Debbie Petzel, Centuria, at $375. Jarek Livestock also consigned the champion wether type ewe, a spring lamb, that borught $275 from Ryan Bingen, Allenton. The class closed out with a Romaine and David Ace spring ewe lamb entry that sold to J & P Farm for $225. The wether type sheep averaged $287, with an overall sale average for the day of $292, up slightly from 2008.
